30 Years of Change, One Mission

In September 1996, AccessU opened as a two-person agency in Roanoke, Virginia. At the time, we could not have imagined what the next three decades would bring. Today, nearly 30 years later, we are an award-winning communications and creative firm serving clients across the nation, with a team of strategists, designers, developers, educators, writers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.

The journey has been remarkable not only because of our growth, our people, our clients, and our work, but also because of the monumental changes that have occurred.

When we started, Google didn’t exist. Neither did Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, smartphones, social media, streaming video, cloud computing, or artificial intelligence marketing tools. Most websites served as little more than digital brochures. Dial-up internet was the standard, and marketing campaigns relied heavily on print, radio, television, and direct mail.

Back then, our toolbox looked very different. We worked with fax machines, film photography, QuarkXPress, early versions of Photoshop, physical paste-up boards, printed proofs, press checks, overnight shipping, and modem connections.

Today feels like a different world, and the pace of change keeps accelerating. Still, we’ve thrived for 30 years by building a company and culture that embraces the opportunities created by every major shift in how people communicate.

Social media changed how audiences discover and share information. Mobile technology raised expectations for speed and access. Cloud-based tools changed how teams work together. Digital analytics gave marketers clearer ways to understand what was working and where to adjust.

With each change, communication became less about broadcasting a message and more about building an ongoing relationship. As the industry matured, client expectations evolved.

Organizations no longer wanted creative work alone. They wanted measurable outcomes, tangible return on investment, and key performance indicators that demonstrated success.

That change challenged us to think differently about the role we played. Our role wasn’t just to create campaigns; it was to help organizations solve problems, build relationships with their audiences, and achieve their missions.

Over time, we expanded our expertise in higher education, branding, research, enrollment marketing, digital strategy, analytics, web development, public relations, strategic communications, and social media. In doing so, we increasingly became a strategic partner rather than simply a creative vendor.

Today, we find ourselves in another period of transformation.

Artificial intelligence, automation, predictive analytics, machine learning, large language models, real-time KPI reporting, and AI-assisted content development are reshaping the communications industry once again.

While the technology is new, the challenge feels familiar. Over the last three decades, we’ve learned that every major innovation creates opportunities for those willing to adapt.

AI is simply the latest chapter in a story we’ve been living since 1996. The tools and technology have changed, but our passion for the work never has. We still value relationships, great storytelling, creativity, and service. These are the things AI will never replace, and they keep us rooted in our mission: Helping our clients live their mission.

Over the years, we’ve served hundreds of clients, created thousands of campaigns, developed brands for airports, hospitals, colleges, communities, manufacturers, and nonprofits, and earned more than 500 local, regional, and national awards. Those honors include more than 400 American Advertising Awards, 18 Telly Awards, a CASE Circle of Excellence Award, and a PRSA Bronze Anvil Award. We also earned a place on the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing companies.

We are proud of those accomplishments, but these awards don’t define our success. Our success is defined by our ability to continue helping organizations tell important stories through every technological revolution, every economic challenge, every platform shift, and every disruption.

If someone had walked into our office on September 2, 1996, and told us that one day we would market through search engines, social media, smartphones, streaming video, cloud platforms, real-time dashboards, and artificial intelligence while serving clients across the country, we probably would have laughed.

Yet here we are.

And perhaps the most remarkable thing isn’t that we’ve navigated 30 years of change.

It’s that our purpose has never changed at all.
